LOVE their teas and the cute teaware they use. Went here on several occassions and it was very laid back. The shabby second hand furniture adds charm to this place. I can't really vouch for their food items as I've only tried one cupcake (decent enough). Again, great teas though.

Drawbacks (hence the 3 stars): NASTY, GROSS, CRAPTACULAR bathroom. I recommend holding it in if at all possible. It's THAT bad. Also, lighting is too dim for reading.

Having JUST gotten internet into my apartment, I anticipate going here much less often. But in the interim, it's been a quality place to check my email, and I enjoy the option of getting a half-price draft beer for happy hour instead of tea all damn day long like some other places. Also, their cupcakes are BOMB.COM and I found the staff to be pretty fun. There are some downsides though, it's crowded and people have either constant shoptalk (annoying) or some very personal conversations (intriguing but weird), which can make it pretty difficult not to eavesdrop either way. My laptop has some persistent issues with their wireless too, but its free and it usually resets soon enough, so no harm no foul. I'll be back, but hopefully not so often.

Now I know why people spend so much money to live in Brooklyn.  This place makes me want to pack up and move to the neighborhood, higher costs of living be damned!

My department of coworkers and I are fortunate to have the opportunity to do field work in the greater NYC area every now and again.  On one recent weekday in Park Slope, we spent a few hours at Tea Lounge to collect our thoughts and notes, because it beat the heck out of trekking back into the office.

We all love, love, LOVED it here.  Really big place by NYC standards.  Lots of comfy couches and mix matched furniture.  It reminded me of a second hand furniture shop, but with free wi-fi and a chill atmosphere.  I think this would be a great place to cruise people.  The food and beverages were excellent.  Well, all except the chocolate covered Twinkie I had.  It was a gooey let down.  I'll skip that and go for the mille crepe cake next time.  Man that looked good.
My coworkers and I were probably a little bit noisy with our conversation, but no one seemed to mind.  A few different people with young kids wandered in for a spell too and the kids seemed chill and relaxed and didn't bother anyone.  The way the furniture is arranged, it's easy to carve out a little private space for your group.

This place is quite a trek from my neighborhood, but I think I will be back!

Note: I think the listing of "Outdoor Seating" in the venue info up top could be misleading.  There are a couple park bench style seats on the sidewalk out front, but they're not as plush and comfy and linger-worthy as the seating indoors.

Yeah, man, way cool place to park  your mac laptop and pretend to write the next great screenplay while you're really checking e-mail. The couches are just soo comfy, they've borne the weight of thousands of underemployed hipsters and aging hippies.  Awesome Turkish coffee, shared pots of tea, and expresso. Wine and some drinks available. The red velvet cake looks decadent. Lots of pasties and some artsy sandwiches for sustained political discussions.
Okay listen here park slope mommies/daddies: your child is not appreciated in the Tea Lounge. This is a place for angst-ridden and dissertation writing twenty and thirty somethings. Leave your mother-earthness at home, it is unappreciated.
If you don't have a nose ring, one tattoo and skinny jeans you'd better rethink your wardrobe, too.

**note; there is a credit minimum of $7 or 10**

If for some reason I find myself forced to go to Tea Lounge to get a coffee to go I brace myself and summon my inner strength to cope with the following elements:
1) Baristas that seem lost and move like they are under water
2) Skid marks on the bakery case from dirty diapers and little hands
3) Sundry filth and crumbs everywhere
4) The wall of stench emanating from the horrific bathrooms
5) Dodging the many running and screaming kids whose parents are obliviously sipping their teas
This place is so brutal it is hilarious.

I like this place for sitting around with an acquaintance, talking quietly, and sipping mint iced tea.
I don't like this place for the rude service, weak coffee and questionable cleanliness.

But! I still return as it is HUMONGOUS. And it's nice to sit in a quiet open space, do your thing, and relax for however long that may be...without any one bothering you.

I hit this place pretty frequently for decent coffee, decent atmosphere, & locale. I live extremely close and can't say I love the coffee elsewhere in the hood. My review of the atmosphere may be partially biased...being under 30 I suppose I'm in the lower half of Park Slope's demographic. Given that, the vibe is low key somewhere between a dive bar and a cafe. Large size although seating can fill up (w/ strollers too depending on time of day)so the living close and grabbing something to go does the trick. Late night bar and live music doesn't hurt either.

How do I hate thee?  Let me count the ways:
1.  Too many breastfeeding mothers:  a trip down Mammary Lane.  And I was a breastfeeding mom so this is not an anti-kid, anti-breastfeeding rant.  It's really just a bit overwhelming -- you'll see.
2.  Too rude staff who seem bothered when you order (who needs that?)
3.  Too average coffee  -- not great and the staff puts milk in for you so it's never the way you want it.
4.  Too dark and gloomy decor.  At first, stuffed furniture all over is appealing, until you spend some time there and realize that this place is ALWAYS open and therefore those seats are NEVER cleaned.  How could they be?  And the diapers I've seen changed on some of them.......
5.  I'm gonna stop now.

I do not like this place

Cute & relaxing space with a good selection of coffee, tea and beer. I came here to hear my dad's blues band play and despite the loungy setup, it really worked for an enthusiastic crowd, while also letting the casual people coming in off the street do their thing too.

One of the girls working there was very friendly and helpful too. And there was free wifi.

Oh, Tea Lounge! How you are in a great location and have a wide offering of teas and coffees.

Onto the cons...

This is not a place to really RELAX and read a book or have a decent convo without screaming over the bad indie rock blasted on their mediocre sound system. Uber-hipster with never enough seating to accommodate its customers. The bathrooms are gross for a Park Slope establishment and don't forget the hole which someone decided to dig out, so watch yourself when you're using this potty.

Where the heck did they find these couches? They're uncomfortable and the wires are felt throughout. With the constant bratty hipster-in-the-making kids running about, I would MUCH rather go to Ozzie's. Thumbs diggity down.

My first thought upon entering was that Tea Lounge may be just a little too proletariat for me.

But, you'll note the four stars.  THAT would be the result of a CHOCOLATE CUPCAKE (yes, I have the palate of a four year old) and really good coffee and great service.  Right now I'm Yelping from a big old soft green leather chair.

Ok this is park slope.  Strollers outnumber cars here, so if you can't deal with a lot of kiddies around pick a different afternoon coffee joint.  I generally limit my daytime interaction with this place to picking up a hot tea to go while I'm doing my laundry next door.

That said, at night tea lounge becomes a lot more hospitable to grown-ups looking for a comfortable spot to have a calm beer.  Staff is laid back and humorous which is a welcome departure from the snobby superiority that tends to accompany a fancy loose leaf tea selection.  Never had a meal here but the chocolate-chip-with-jam cookie thing is very yummy with the hot beverage of your choice.  Free Monday movie screenings go with the whole clubhouse theme (it's a room full of couches, booze, and snacks).  Worth checking out the schedule.

The wicker fans are completely pointless but I like them anyway.

Here's what's really great about the Tea Lounge, and why I recommend bringing a friend who hasn't been there before:

Walk in during the day and then stop so your pal can take it in. If your friend insists that it does not look like a university student lounge give her 5 bucks. Avoiding the breast-feeding area du jour, wait on line and grab a drink, then very slowly walk around all the aisles -- the place is gigantic -- and pause to look down over the shoulders of every 22 year old sitting staring intently at her computer. If your friend can find even one person actually working on something, give her another 5. Thinking of plopping down and reading? Forget it. The music is so loud you can't think. One day I'm going to walk in and grab a seat, plug in an electric shaver and clean up.

Two Good Words: Matte Latte!
Two Bad Words: Sparse Seating
The Last Word?: A good place to chill with friends. Very laid back. The tea is excellent, and if you can find seating, it's the best place to spend a sunday afternoon.

This is my new, favorite coffee shop in New York -- and that's saying a lot since I've been looking for a good one for almost 2 years.

Tea Lounge embodies everything a coffee shop should be.  It's full of lots of nooks, armchairs, couches and conversation.  Most importantly, the WiFi is free, fast and available on weekends.  The people behind the counter are appropriately informal (yet not rude) while fully amped on their own product.

Tea Lounge is now my New York standard for coffee shops.  This is my place for work-away-from-work and hanging-out-away-from-home.  Whether you bring a book, a laptop, or merely an appreciation for the atmosphere, you won't be disappointed.

My favorite thing about Tea Lounge: when I have a cold, I ask the tea-rista to mix up something to make me feel better and they always are happy to whip up some concoction of mysterious dried leaves that does the trick.

The people who work here are all very friendly and laid back. The clientele, less so, but I guess you can't fault them for being four years old. I'm talking about the 2-4pm Stroller Armada. I actually don't mind watching cute toddlers tumble all over the sofas as a general rule but sometimes I just want to have a nice quiet adult cup of coffee and book time. So I avoid going here those times, especially right when school lets out.

I had a very pleasant experience here with a group of friends on a late weekday night. No strollers on Monday at 9pm-11pm ish.

They have a great beer and wine selection, and a variety of baked goods and snacky things. It's a great place to hang out -- especially if you can get a booth like we did.

If I went in the daytime, I'd probably make it a to-go order. I'm afraid of catching hippie scabies off the couches.

Tea Lounge is a hipster holdout, so be aware of that when you visit. Expect a wide variety of teas and coffees served to you by shallow uppity baristas wearing American Apparel swag.

I really hate this place. Lately it's become known as a place for bathroom hookups and drug use, the guys who work the counters will often troll for booty as they work (last year an employee in his mid to late 20s picked up a friend's 17 year old daughter), and the overheard conversation is insipid at best. Also, they serve alcohol after a certain time and they won't card anyone who isn't afraid to flash a little breast, so there's that element.

Honestly, I could not be more disenchanted with this coffee shop. Visit at your own peril.

The only reason I ever really find myself in the tea lounge is if I need a place with free internet where I can sit down and do my work away from the distractions of all of the amenities of home.

Unfortunately, Tea Lounge is chock full of it's own distractions, whether it's the entire preschool of children playing hide and go seek in between the comfortable couches or the blasting of usually subpar tunes that  due to the sheer volume usually thwarts any attempt I make at drowning out music I don't enjoy.

Between the loud tunes and the kids running around, frankly I'd just rather stay home.

If there is an upside to Tea Lounge it's the wide selection of quality teas.  I suppose that's a pretty positive upside for a Tea lounge, but if you have to frequent Tea Lounge, my suggestion...get it to go.

Ah yes, the inimitable Tea Lounge on Union Street in Park Slope.  You may love it, you may hate it, but only I am more or less indifferent to it.  It's in a great location, and can be a great place to meet up for tea/coffee and conversation, but if your tolerance level for bespectacled man-children peering intently into their MacBooks is low, this might not be the place for you.  I've never been during the day, but I've also been led to believe that it's hard to navigate through the baby carriages during certain times of the day, in case that bothers you.  Personally, I love it best because of its proximity to the Park Slope Food Co-op, so I can have an organic oat and boysenberry bar with my rooibos tea before freshening up my patchouli and heading over to do a shift at the Co-op.  Ommmmmmmmmm....

Haha, just kidding.  Seriously, it's a Park Slope coffeehouse.  You know what you're getting yourself into.  Nice selection of teas and coffees, plenty of seating, and that's what counts.  Come during the quiet early evening, leave before the live band starts to drown out conversations about Nietzsche.

Is this place a coffee shop? Or a teahouse? Or a daycare center? It confuses me. Too many hippies and strollers and soft lights.

It feels like being inside Mister Rogers' bowels after he ate some bad hemp and curry granola in the seventies.

Now THIS is the place for the true bean and leaf  aficionado and connoisseur.  The staff knows their stuff, however slow they may often be.  I don't hang out here but will often make the trip past Heights, Prospect Perk, Joyce, Gorilla, and Ozzy's which are all closer to me, just to get a properly made Turkish coffee or cappuccino.  Even their soy milk always has the perfect foam/steamed ratio and they serve all their drinks at the perfect -not boiling-temperature, preserving the perfect roasted flavor. Aah...

This is my go-to place whenever I want to get out of the house. It's a few F stops away from me, or a 10 minute bike ride. The selection of tea is excellent. Their food isn't great. It's the sort of stuff you would teach a teenager to make if Mom's not home. Yeah, that pretty much describes the staff, too. Very comfortable place with a variety of people. WARNING: During the day, it's full of Slopedren. Organic baby food types.

Two Jews, a Filipina, and a blond walk into the Tea Lounge...

Heard this one? Doubt it!
(To be fair one of the Jews walked in with the Filipina, then came the Blond, and then the other Jew, but let's not pick on the little details)

The Jew and the Filipina stake claim on a shared seating area. The Jew gets her Chai Latte

Woman: Can i get an iced nonfat chai latte please?
Server: How big?
Woman: How big you got?
Server: I am going to make you the sexiest chai latte you have ever had.
Woman: Oh really, well if  I (insert inappropriate sexual comment here), you get an extra dollar.
Woman looks at Chai Latte, made with a flower drawn from honey and cinnamon on top, and gives up the extra dollar.. it was sexy, and very tasty.

Shortly, the other two women arrive. The four ladies share a seating area with a stranger, an older bespectacled man with graying hair and a laptop, who is setting off Jew-dar. He moves from a chair to the sofa where the Filipina woman sits. He moves her pink cowboy hat (this is never a smart move)

The women arm themselves with a panini, a latte, coffee, bagel, red velvet cake (not highly recommended), chocolate cake, etc... Conversation turns to writing projects and the Filipina woman getting a call from her lit agent.

Man: (interrupting conversation) Oh, you have an agent?
Alpha-Filipina: Yes
Man: What do you do?
Alpha Filipina: I am a writer
Man: What do you write
Alpha Filipina: (without turning head to face him) Stuff!
Man: What kind of Stuff
Alpha Filipina: (eyes rolling) Just stuff.

Man goes back to what he is doing. It is clear from his changing facial expressions he is still listening to conversation. He moves the pillow that separates him from his prey.  She stands, retrieves the pillow, puts back in place. Shot down hard.

Some more conversation. The second Jewish woman recants stories of lost loves, bad connections, and other tales of relationships not to be. The man interrupts again.

Man: Are you a singer?
Jewish woman: No.. Do I look like a singer?
Man: What do you do?
Jewish woman: I am a writer.
Man: Really? I'm a writer too.

Not having the same alpha characteristics as the Filipinawoman, the Jewish woman engages in some polite friendly conversation with the man, a writer working on a humor-based pilot, who used to work for a humor magazine. Maybe you have heard of it, National Lampoon.

The other Jewish woman, feeling exhausted from a day of heckling Cops on Segways, dirty mermaids, and other interesting sorts, sits thankful she is not the man's newest prey. Her thoughts waver between ordering the Moroccan Mint Mojito and making more jokes about how this will all end up as another possibly bad J-Date match-up.

The three women, and a friend who arrived later, whisk the poor Jewish woman from the clutches of the evil humor writer faster than Roseanne snatched food from the Craft Service station.

They leave for the bar.. Ah.... Freedom!
4 Stars, if not for the food, for the entertainment.

I'm not going to lie: I have frequented this place in the past.  It has its pros and cons for sure-- we'll start with the pros for good measure:

The atmosphere is chill, and it can be a comfortable haven if one is in the mood to study, work, read, or simply hang out.  The coffee is great and the food is decent, but one should not walk into the Tea Lounge expecting an incredible meal.  The evening is the best time to go to check out the music; local jazz groups and bands tend to frequent the small, intimate space throughout the week (and I believe they still have a movie night on Mondays).

Now for the cons: when you walk in, you have to remember, for the sake of your sanity, that you are in Park Slope. Therefore you should be on your guard for the two absolutely true stereotypes that tend to frequent places like the Tea Lounge: the mommies and the hipsters.  If  you go in the evening, the Park-Slope-stroller-Nazi-mumsies shouldn't be as much of a problem, but if you choose to go mid-morning or afternoon, I can't promise  you won't walk in on a breast-feeding party. It happens.
The hipster-yuppie-hippies tend to be a quiet, self-concerned group--in the Tea Lounge, at least.  Basically, if you leave them alone, they won't bitch at you like you know they want to, if only for the sake of attention.

Overall, the Tea Lounge can be a mellow, relaxing place to spend time: provided, of course, that you remember exactly what neighborhood you're in (I can't believe how much the Slope has changed since I lived there, and not necessarily all for the better).

Dear Tea Lounge:

1. Please open up a tea lounge just for mommies. I don't like going in there to relax and drink pricey mint tea during Rugrats hour.
2. No more wicker fans. Useless.
3. Please label your butter and cream cheese. My friend got confused and ingested too much oil.

Thanks,

Hippie parents wanted a place to hang out, get caffienated up by day, liquored up by night, in a cozy kid-friendly environment.  So God in her wisdom created the Tea Lounge for them.  It manages, somewhat erratically, to cater to everyone --- single young people, families, couples, people who want a meal, who want a beer, who want a cup of coffee.  It's like a freakin Village Tavern.  Yes it's careworn, yes it's a zoo most of the time, but it's also a pickup place, a day care place, a laptop place, and (oddly) a place where people still offer their services on hand photocopied notices posted all over the front like a 1970s college mailroom. This establishment is the heart and soul of Park Slope, along with the Food Coop a few feet down Union Street.

Yeah, you walk in, and there you are... It's as if, CENTRAL PERK found a more indie-pop type setting to "settle" into. Definitely try the key lime cookie to satisfy your sweet tooth. It's a cash only joint. The place does not offer wi-fi, though lots of it is floatin' around. There's some nice belgian beers that are offered alongside the usual shots of espresso, and pots of tea.

you know that college co-op that you always went to parties at and heard your friends complain about?

and you always thought, they have so much space and so much artistic talent, there's such potential there.

but it never quite came to fruition. it kinda sat in stasis. so take that space and clean up a couple things - great selection of teas and beers, some impressive art to match the, uh, less impressive art, and a pretty impressive but useless fan system - and you end up with the tea lounge.

points for comfort, points for space. but there's just so much talent. and so much potential...

Wow... I have to say, one of the best places I've been to recently. Very spacious and open, lots of seating, couches, etc. Very comfortable. And crowded. Free Wi-Fi!! They have a nice selection of tea and coffee, sandwiches, toasted stuff, eggs, quiches, salads, smoothies... Reasonable prices. Had a croissant with eggs, tomato and cucumber, and a Turkish coffee. Very good. Lights dimmed at 6:15. Also later on a group of people gathered around the back to sing folk music (The NY Pinewoods Folk Music Club), which was very strange but very cool. Only thing was that before that they had loud music playing and I was trying to work... Overall though, great!

Great selection of teas, wines and beer. I like to go to Tea Lounge later in the day or else I tend to run into sing-alongs and storytimes and it makes it tough to hang out with friends or just relax. Always full, always something going on here.

Look, I think this place has filled a much needed gap in the neighborhood, for both young people with laptops, and for parents looking to bring their kids during the day. But to tell the truth, I've never had a very good experience at this Tea Lounge. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea (no pun intended) I truly think the lighting is too low for real reading and working, the music is always erratic, and the used furniture could use some serious cleaning. Overall, the feel is of a college-type ware-house romper-room space. For me, that's just not what I'm looking for. Don't get me wrong - I stop in there often, as it has magnificent fresh tea. But between the music, the lumpy sunken chairs, and low lighting, all I can recommend here are brewed beverages to go.

I love the two Tea Lounge locations, but of the two, this is my least favorite. Sure, it's bigger and brighter and has more events, but it lacks the "coziness" of the 7th Ave. Tea Lounge. And, it attracts more older people and families. I've never been to this Tea Lounge without there being several moms with babies there. So if you're looking for the "younger" and "more hip" crowd, check out the 7th Ave. location.

That much said, I still rate the Union St. Tea Lounge high because I love the food and drink they have to offer. You cannot beat the Hot Chocolate! Once you have it, you'll never go back to those Swiss Miss packets again!!  The tea selection is also amazing. Additionally, there is a great array of baked goods, including Fat Witch Brownies (yum!), vegan cookies (yum-yum!), and a great selection of delicious cupcakes (yum-yum-yum!)! This location, Union St., is larger than the 7th Ave. Tea Lounge and has a wider selection of baked goodies.

UPDATE: Just an FYI, the cupcakes at the Tea Lounge come from Crumbs. (Yummy!)

eh..  the food is good but the atmosphere is much to hippish for my liking, its either strollers or guys with beards and pants up to their chests with their ibooks .  the music was kind of loud as i was working on a project with someone else and had to smell the quiche on their breath (the quiche was indeed tasty though) the food is ok and the staff seemed as they dropped out of junior high school.  hurts me to admit it but id rather go to starbucks

i loved the tea lounge

then i went back and i hated the tea lounge because there was no place to sit

then i loved it again because i had a really good salad and had a place to sit

then they changed the free wi-fi to some retarded ad supported super-slow retarded thing and i hated the tea lounge for logging me out of IRC every 6.5 minutes

then i went back again stood in line for too long when i was hung over and had some really good coffee and a massive fresh squeezed orange/carrot juice and a yummy muffin and saw the sea of macbooks and i got sentimental about all the macs and i loved it again even though there was no place to sit

political aside: i appreciate that all the coffee houses in park slope support the mentally disabled by giving them jobs

I give it 5 stars for everything, but 3 for food, and a complicated algorithm rounds it to 4.  I know this is the bigger of the two places, but I really liked the open space, the couches and tables and chairs scattered around and up on platforms - it creates a very decentralized yet communal space with funky nooks and crannies (and even has a massage chair...).  Especially on a cold autumn day, this is a great place to pop in for an afternoon to do some reading, some writing, or just hanging out.

That said, the sandwich I got (prosciutto mozz panini) was kind of gnarly - it must have been sitting out for a while and they grilled it with the greens in - just tasted stale.  Everyone speaks highly of the beverages, in the future that's what I'll stick to.

I have to say that I'm pretty frightened and turned off by the cavernous interior of this Tea Lounge location. The thunderous tapping of keys, the scritch-scritch of stroller wheels across the concrete, the cacophany of competing voices and the bustle of the kitchen assault you as you walk through the door and create an uncomfortable feeing of unrest and overexposure. However, the service is very friendly, weekdays are not as miserable as weekends, flavored coffee does not cost extra and they'll make you a peanut butter and banana sandwich. I would never  attempt to do work here or read but it is a good place for groups and the seating out front is a nice feature. If you too are frightened by the phalanx of ferociously typing laptop jockeys sitting against the far wall illuminated by the pulsating glow of their computers, just grab a hazelnut coffee with soy milk to go and retire to the front bench.

i like the tea lounge just fine.  it's a good place to meet up with people when you're unsure how much time you're going to want to spend with them.  that being said, the food & drink are relatively expensive; finding a place to sit is surprisingly difficult given how big this location is; and i always run into people i went to college with, people who think they've "discovered" the tea lounge even though i've been going there since high school (that's my own beef, obviously.)  usually i choose to go somewhere else.  oh, once i saw jennifer connelly and paul bettany there with their kids.
